This is a rare, small, L-shaped *ch?ba-dansu* (merchant’s chest)?a type of cabinetry once used in the counting rooms of shops and post-station inns during the Meiji era. Its unique L-shaped, stair-like silhouette and asymmetrical drawer arrangement?which adds a dynamic, three-dimensional quality to any space?imbue the piece with the commanding presence and sophisticated design characteristic of fine Japanese antiques. The solid wood, having deepened in tone over the years, possesses a rich, evocative texture that speaks to its long history of use. Notably, the interiors of the drawers still bear traces of ink stains?a poignant detail that offers a glimpse into the daily lives and practical activities of those who used it long ago. Whether used for storing small items, as a display stand for cherished ornaments or plants, or as a unique fixture in a retail space, this one-of-a-kind piece brings a distinct, storied accent to any interior.
Period: Meiji Era
Specifications: L-shaped merchant’s chest (*ch?ba-dansu*) with various small storage drawers (includes ink stains inside).
Condition: As is typical for antiques, the piece shows signs of age, including scuffs, scratches, shrinkage in the wood grain, and ink stains within the drawers?all of which contribute to its unique, one-of-a-kind character. Please consider this with an understanding of the inherent qualities of such an aged, historical object.
