The inscription on the back reads, "The tile is from Kawaradera Temple, an abandoned temple in Nara Prefecture, approximately 1,400 years ago." Kawaradera Temple (Kofukuji Temple), located in Asuka Village, Nara Prefecture, was one of the three major temples of the Asuka period. It was a major national temple boasting a magnificent "one tower, two main halls" layout. Said to have been built by Emperor Tenji on the site of Empress Saimei's palace, it was deeply revered during the reign of Emperor Tenmu and is known for having Japan's first sutra copying space. However, it was abandoned at the end of the Muromachi period, and today, its remains, along with Kofukuji Temple, built on the site of the central main hall, remain as a historic site. It truly is a tale of ancient romance. Please check the images and video for signs of deterioration.
