It is made mainly of wood such as paulownia and keyaki, finished with lacquer, and features gorgeous and bold hand-carved metal fittings. In particular, there are two types of metal fittings: hand-carved metal fittings and Nambu ironware metal fittings (cast metal fittings), which are the main feature of Iwayado chest. It began in the mid-Edo period when Date Muramasa, the lord of Iwayado Castle, had his vassal Mishina Shigezaemon make a chest.
